BMW R18

• BMW has entered the cruiser segment with the revelation of a heavyweight retro-cruiser inspired by the classic BMW R5 built in 1936, named as BMW R18.
• The motorbike is integrated with a boxer engine which is also the new biggest ever produced engine by BMW.
• BMW R18 is a classic looking motorbike which meets the modern technology.


BMW is a name recognized by almost everyone because of its amazing and outstanding vehicles, it is a German multinational company which produces luxurious as well as sports cars and motorcycles. Recently BMW Motorrad has entered the cruiser segment with a surprise by the revelation of a 2021 retro-cruiser inspired by the classic BMW R5 built in 1936, both technically and visually, and installing their latest boxer engine, goes by the name BMW R18. A heavyweight cruiser with a weight of 345 kg, 23 kg more than the Harley Davidson Fat Boy.

R18 is equipped with 1800 cc boxer engine


This German heavyweight cruiser comes with a new biggest ever produced engine by BMW of 1802 cc air and oil cooled overhead valve design which has four valves per cylinder, the valves are operated by a pushrod and rocker arrangement which is driven by a dual chain driven camshaft.

The engine generates a maximum power of 91 bhp at 4750 rpm which goes upto a revolution of 5750 rpm and a peak torque of about 157 Nm at 3000 rpm. The boxer engine comes with a six-speed transmission, single disc dry clutch which won’t lock the wheel while downshifting and electric motor driven reverse gear, the power is transferred to the rear wheel through an exposed shaft drive which is a technical touch from the old BMW R5.

BMW claims that R18 is a classic looking motorbike which meets the modern technology, the motorbike will come in two variants – a standard version and the First Edition. The retro cruiser visualizes a water drop shaped fuel tank, decorated with a chrome exhaust, 49 mm telescopic front fork, tank emblem, exposed driveshaft, double loop frame surrounds the final drive, valve covers, all these inspired from the old boy R5 and the First Edition version will give you a clear resemblance of it.

R18 is equipped with LED lights and turn indicators will work together as tail light

LED lights will be equipped on the motorbike with no tail light as rear turn indicators will work together as tail light, the console is a rounded analogue with small digital display and well finished cockpit.

The motorcycle will provide three riding modes, the three Rs – Rain, Roll and Rock, each mode containing unique application of BMW’s Automatic Stability Control (ASC) and Motor Slip Regulation (MSR).

Rain mode will provide a better traction control, MSR and ABS over the motorbike with a light throttle response, the roll is for daily purpose of street use of the motorbike and the rock mode will provide the best throttle response making you feel the full power and capacity of the engine, the motorbike also comes with a cruise control.

The rear wheel is powered through an exposed shaft drive which is inspired from the BMW R5


The motorbike can be customized according to the owner’s taste, it comes with a mid-mounted footpegs as it is impossible to get an elongated riding position, the wheelbase is 1731 mm, the Mustang Seats, the Roland Sands Collection and the Vance and Hines are specially created by BMW. It is a limited edition motorbike that comes with assembly gloves, tank emblems, a leather belt, screwdriver and a book will contain a history of BMW Motorrads. The price of the motorbike in the US is $17,495 (around ₹13.36 lakh) for the base variant and $19,870 (around ₹15.18 lakh) for the First Edition, the Motorbike will be available either till the late 2020s or early 2021s, no reports for the R18 availability in India.
